Laura Genet Marano

Advisor, Tøyen Unlimited, Norway

Laura Genet Marano was awarded by the University of Oslo for the best master's thesis 2022 on the interdisciplinary theme of sustainability. Her research explores inclusive urban development in practice, with a focus on Nairobi, Kenya. Her academic background in international development, politics and environmental humanities is complemented by 15 plus years of experience within the tertiary sector in England, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Norway. Laura has founded two social enterprises, worked for NGOs and humanitarian organisations as a community organiser, advocate, and manager. Laura is currently a key part of the team scaling the Tøyen Unlimited model of place-based support for social entrepreneurs across Norway. As an advisor on social impact measurement her expertise focuses on accounting for the incremental and at best transformative change to communities that is galvanised by social entrepreneurs and activists from the micro 'neighbourhood' level up.

Quote: "I am invested in the idea that good intentions alone do not create the systems change needed to solve the pressing challenges of our time. It is the aggregate that helps maintain the social change needed to shift a tide towards more inclusive and sustainable societies."
