Venkatakrishnan (Venkat) Ramaswamy

  • Independent Research, Consultant and Learner, Tamil Nadu

    Venkat has about 40 years of experience across Manufacturing and IT industries. Venkat has facilitated several Six Sigma and Kaizen projects in process excellence focused on reducing wastes, resource reuse, optimization and savings. Venkat is an advisor to a Charitable organization that focuses on enabling the youth for Urban sustainability in TamilNadu,India. He does his own information research now on the Urban sustainable data and activities globally.

Rosario Adapon Turvey

  • Associate Professor of Sustainability Science and Geography, Lakehead University, Ontario, Canada

    Dr. Rosario Adapon Turvey is Associate Professor of Sustainability Science and also of Geography and the Environment at Lakehead University in Ontario, Canada. Concurrently, she is the Associate Leader in Environmental Sustainability at the Research Centre for Sustainable Communities at Lakehead. Her educational qualifications include a PhD in geography and a masters degree in applied environmental studies from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada and also a master degree in urban and regional planning from the University of the Philippines in Quezon City, Philippines. In 1999, she was appointed as a PhD Fellow of the United Nations University’s Institute of Advanced Study in Sustainability in Japan (UNU-IAS) which promotes education and research on sustainable development. She has served as an international expert in projects funded by the United Nations Development Programme and the UN Office for Project Services in the South Pacific from 1987-1998. Her research has been published in distinguished international and national journals on topics related to place-making and sustainable community development in Canada’s towns and small communities, green economy, local economic development, vulnerability assessment and planning of sustainable cities. She has co-edited books and authored book chapters on fragile states and economic security, environmental sustainability and sustainability research. She is an Editorial Board member of the International Journal of Social Sciences of the European Research Center; reviewer for several journals such as the Environment, Development and Sustainability Journal, Ecological Economics and International Journal of Sustainable Society and Associate Editor/Reviewer for the Sustainability Collection, Common Ground Publishing. 

Jeffery Fletcher

  • Manager of Sustainability and Solid Waste, Town of The Blue Mountains, Canada

    Manager of Sustainability and Solid Waste for Town of The Blue Mountains, Jeffery has been involved in municipal waste management and sustainability planning for over 20 years. He is a member of the ICLEI Canada board and a graduate of Nipissing University, Environmental Geography and Sir Sanford Fleming College, Ecosystem Studies.

Juan Carlos Muñoz 

  • Professor, Transport Engineering at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Director of the Centre of Sustainable Urban Development and the Institute for Sustainable Development, Chile

    Juan Carlos Muñoz got his Phd in Civil Engineering from UC Berkeley in 2002. He is a Professor in Transport Engineering at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile where he is the Director of the Centre of Sustainable Urban Development (CEDEUS) and the Institute for Sustainable Development. He also founded and led the Bus Rapid Transit Centre of Excellence for eight years. Three spin-off companies have started out of his research: Shift, Transit and eTrans. A former board member of the Santiago and Valparaíso Metro systems, Prof Muñoz is a public transport enthusiast and daily user, and a frequent advisor to the Chilean government on public transport issues.

Ian Gilzean

  • Chief Architect of Planning and Architecture Division, The Scottish Government, Scotland

    Ian graduated in architecture from Edinburgh University in 1982. He worked in architectural practice for a number of public sector organisations as well as in private practice, in London, Glasgow and Edinburgh. He also worked in community design units in Wester Hailes, Edinburgh and Drumchapel, Glasgow. Ian joined the Scottish Executive in 1999 and became Chief Architect in 2006. He has responsibility for the development and implementation of ‘Creating Places’ the Scottish Government's policy on architecture and place. From 2008-2016 he was a Visiting Professor in Architecture at the University of Strathclyde and is currently involved in teaching the Masters in Architecture and Urban Planning at Dundee University. In early 2015, Ian spent a three month secondment at the Melbourne School of Design as a Visiting Fellow on housing related design.

Rosalyn Morrison 

  • Chair of the Board of Directors, Institute of Southern Georgian Bay, Canada

    Rosalyn Morrison is passionate about the power of community and the region of Southern Georgian Bay. She currently serves as Chair of the Board of Directors, Institute of Southern Georgian Bay www.tisgb.com, a Board member of the Blue Mountain Village Foundation, and member of Collingwood’s Sustainable Development Goals/SDG Town Task Force.


    Formerly, as Vice President, Community Initiatives, and Senior Advisor to the CEO at Toronto Foundation www.torontofoundation.ca, Rosalyn was involved in connecting philanthropy to community needs and opportunities, and responsible for the Foundation’s research, community convening, and Vital Signs Report. She also led the team’s ground-breaking Social Capital Report, which benchmarked levels of Trust, Social Networks, Civic Connections, and Neighbourhood Support across the city, as well as the Foundation’s involvement in 100 Resilient Cities, a Rockefeller Foundation initiative dealing with urbanization, globalization, and climate change.


    Rosalyn has held leadership roles in the arts and culture sector, where she focused on strategy development for provincial and national organizations and establishing partnerships with businesses, educational institutions, public galleries, and private and public funders. She is a recipient of Craft Ontario’s John and Barbara Mather Award for Lifetime Achievement. Her community involvement includes serving as Vice Chair, Board of Governors, Ontario College of Art and Design University; Chair, Ontario Summer Games Legacies Committee; and Chair of the Playing for Keeps collaboration, a social legacy inspired by the 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games, and on advisory committees for ArtReach, Metcalf Foundation, George Brown College, Community Foundations of Canada, and the City of Toronto.

David T. Downey

  • President & CEO for International Development Association

    As President and Chief Executive Officer, David is responsible for the overall strategic positioning of IDA as a world leader and champion for vital and livable urban centers. Prior to joining IDA, David served as the Managing Director for the American Institute of Architects’ Urban Design Center and as Executive Director for the Michigan Chapter of the American Planning Association. David has been a city advocate since the 1980s, having received his degree in Architecture and Design with a focus on Urban Design. He speaks frequently throughout North America and has delivered talks in the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Australia, Sweden, Denmark, El Salvador and Japan. David has served on numerous not-for-profit boards in the past 25 years, and is currently serving on the boards of the Golden Triangle BID in Washington, D.C., and the Responsible Hospitality Institute.
