The Hon. Oscar Requena

Minister of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour, and Local Government, Belize

The Hon. Oscar Requena was appointed as Minister of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour, and Local Government in November 2020. Hon. Requena brings over 30 years of experience in service to the people of Belize. Prior to being appointed Minister of Government, he served from 1988 to 2002 as an Educator, Curriculum Officer, and Education Officer with the Ministry of Education. In 2012, he was elected as the Area Representative for the Toledo West constituency. He has served on various Boards including the Toledo Teachers Credit Union (TTCU) as one of its founding members and served over 20 years in the capacities of President and later, Treasurer of the TTCU Board.



Born in 1970, he holds a Master’s Degree in Rural Education from the University of Costa Rica, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Belize. He is also a trained and certified Teacher and Principal from the Belize Teachers College.


He is a tireless advocate for education, rural development, and a voice for the voiceless and marginalized.
